The Case of the Vanishing Cupcakes

This story happens at my house during the most epic sleepover of all time. We turned the living room into a pillow fort so big it had a second floor! It was raining, and we had a giant bowl of popcorn and a tower of cupcakes for midnight. My friend Theo brought a clipboard with a schedule for the sleepover. A schedule! For fun! Obviously, I ignored it.

At exactly 9:14—Theo checked—the lights flickered and we heard a weird CRUNCH from the kitchen. We ran in and the cupcake tower was gone! Not knocked over, just GONE, with one tiny frosting footprint on the counter. "This is a case," Theo said, grabbing his clipboard. "No way," I said. "This is a MYSTERY." My cat Duchess just licked her paw like she had never seen a cupcake in her life.

Theo pulled a magnifying glass from his backpack and measured the footprint. "Too big for a cat, too small for a person," he said. We followed a trail of sprinkles out of the kitchen, down the hallway, and straight into the pillow fort's second floor. There we found an empty cupcake wrapper and my little brother's teddy bear wearing a mustache made of frosting!

"The bear did it," Theo said, and wrote it on his clipboard. "Theo," I said, "the bear is a BEAR. It doesn't have a mouth that works." Then Duchess did something she never does: she hissed at a dark corner of the fort. We grabbed flashlights, counted to three, and ripped the blanket off the corner. There was a whole tunnel!

Somebody had dug a secret cushion tunnel from the fort straight to the kitchen, and there were sprinkles ALL the way down it. We crawled down the tunnel—me first, Theo second, and Duchess last because she refused to get her bow dirty. It got darker and darker, and at the very end there was a little lump hiding under a blanket, breathing really loud.

6

Plot twist: I pulled off the blanket and it was Theo's clipboard! It was sitting on the missing cupcake tower! And there was a note taped to it that said, in Theo's handwriting, "9:15 PM, SURPRISE!"

Theo turned bright red. He admitted he dug the tunnel, hid the cupcakes, and even put the mustache on the teddy bear. My old rival built me a mystery, on purpose, because I once said mysteries are more fun than schedules. So we sat in the tunnel and ate every cupcake. Duchess got the frosting off the teddy bear, and Theo wrote on his clipboard: "9:30 PM, best night ever, case closed."
